Creation of the parliamentary caucus on intellectual property and the fight against counterfeiting
An event was held on March 12 to launch the Parliamentary Caucus to Promote Intellectual Property and Fight Counterfeiting. The event was supported by INTERFARMA, the Brazilian Patent Office (INPI) and Interpat, a non-profit association of research-based biopharmaceutical companies, which presented the study “Value of intellectual property for health and growth – The economic benefits of strengthening the innovation environment in Brazil”. Check full the full study at click here.
According to the results of the document, Brazil has great potential in innovation activities, even though the country is lagging OECD countries. Advances can happen through national innovation plans, economic incentives and robust IP protection rules. These measures would have a positive impact on all innovative and economic activities. Granting of data protection also has proven to be an essential tool for growth in investments for clinical trials, research and innovation.
During the event, INPI presented the progress made in the plan to fight the patent backlog in Brazil. INPI also raised awareness about negative impacts caused by the requirement of ANVISA´s previous allowance to pharmaceutical patent applications.
